This game is not going to blow anyone away with graphics and sound, but some of the features this game has to offer are quite surprising. First of all, the tutorial lessons are excellent and easy to follow. The little pop-quizzes during the tutorial are a very nice touch. Another nice feature is the "Puzzle" feature, which offers a board setup and challenges the player to solve a puzzle such as "Mate in Two" or "Find Check".
The "chess" part of the game is very good. I'm a mediocre chess player, so I can't speak on how challenging the AI will be for those folks who can already beat most computer and human opponents available on the Internet. However, the "ranked play" is another great feature. Rather than just giving you a difficulty setting, which is usually a meaningless number, this game offers computer opponents with rank score and brief description. For example, Sonja has a rank of 824 and "over-values queens". You can definitely see the different play styles of the various computer opponents. Of course, your rank will go up or down depending on the result of the match and the rank of your opponent. I highly recommend this game for the gamer who wants a decent "chess on the computer" type game or the mediocre to fair chess player who wants to become reacquainted with chess. -- Solid Chess Game with Surprising Features
I've lost track of how many hours I've played this game, and how many times I've downloaded and redownloaded it. I was disappointed when the last time I tried to download it from [...], I discovered it was no longer available. I'd purchased it from [...]. Imagine my relief when I discovered that it was still available from www.Amazon.com!
Of all the electronic Chess games I've played, and I've played about a half dozen, this is the only I one I even bother to play anymore. (My all time favorite is ChessMates, but I haven't been able to get a computer to install and play it since I started using Windows XP.)
The main reason I like this version is the look and feel of it. It has a 3D board you can virtually grab, tilt and rotate until it's at an angle which suits me. The sound effects are realistic. Another thing I like is that this game lets me play a wide variety of artificially intelligent opponents, and maintain a ranking among them which changes with each win, loss and stalemate. These cyber opponents range from a chimpanzee, whose style in random, to opponents many levels above my onw.
There's also a training mode, which lets you select how much or how little help you want, such as showing you where a selected piece can move, and spaces your opponent controls.
This is perhaps the best electronic Chess game available for Windows 98 or XP. -- The Only Computerized Chess Game I Play!
I bought this after a very disappointing experience with grandmaster chess tournament. It's a well written code with a very user friendly interface, a good number of puzzles and lots of supporting material. I highly recommend this product. -- good product
